In 1858, New Yorkers started building what will later prove to be the largest gothic Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The new structure, designed by James Renwick, was meant to replace the original St. Patrick's Cathedral, which is now a parish church. The construction of the new Cathedral lasted for 21 years, and so, St. Patrick's Cathedral opened only in 1879.
But the cathedral wasn’t completely finished. In 1888, the Archbishop Michael Corrigan built the West Front Towers and started working on the Lady Chapel, later completed by Cardinal Farley. Between 1927 and 1931, Cardinal Hayes renovated the interior of the Cathedral, enlarged the sanctuary and installed a great organ. Cardinal Spellman and, after him, Cardinal Cooke renovated the Cathedral’s exterior.
Nowadays, St. Patrick's Cathedral is the seat of Edward M. Egan, the Archbishop of New York. The Cathedral can house approximately 2,200 people and about 3 million people visit it every year.
Under the altar are buried the Archbishops of New York. The Pieta in St. Patrick's Cathedral is three times larger than the one in St. Peter’s.
