We invite all art lovers to open their hearts to music at Carnegie Hall. This splendid venue is located at 57th Street and 7th Avenue. The Carnegie Hall was built in 1890 by Andrew Carnegie and is now considered one of the most important and renowned venues for classical and popular music in America. On May 5, 1891, the opening concert was conducted by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The Italian Renaissance style building was designed by William Burnet Tuthill and was built of masonry. A steel framework was added years later. The use of terracotta and brownstone add a special charm to the Carnegie Hall.
Each season, the Carnegie Hall invites music lovers to about 100 amazing performances. Three auditoriums make up the Carnegie Hall: the Main Hall or the Isaac Stern Auditorium, the Chamber Music Hall and the Recital Hall.
Very tall, the Main Hall offers 2,804 seats on five levels. The Recital Hall is now called the Joan and Sanford L. Weill Recital Hall and offers 268 seats, while the Chamber Music Hall, also called the Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall offers 599 seats.
